Librarians talking about MOPED ARMY!

Kevin King has just been sending me some of the recents messages on the listserv forums for the libraries across the nation, and they’re talking about MOPED ARMY! Here’s a sampling:

“I am totally excited about Moped Army and just ordered it for the
collection.”
Jennifer Rodrick
Teen Librarian, West Palm Beach Public Library
“I went to school in Kalamazoo, and at the time there was a small but
growing Moped Army that called themselves the Decepticons (and the few
people I met in the group seemed to have similar missions to the plot
described – aside from the year). Turns out, there’s a website now:
http://www.mopedarmy.com/ and I noticed that
Sizer has a lot of ties to Kalamazoo. I wonder if the author has anything to do with the group?”
Heather Booth, Literature & Audio Services Librarian
Downers Grove Library
Kat, MOPED ARMY sounds like such a fun book! Just your description
brought back fond memories of my own moped owner days in high school
(late 1970s.) At the time, of course, I wanted a motorcycle. A moped
was my parents’ compromise. But it WAS really fun and easy to run. Gas
prices being what they are, I’m beginning to wish I had never sold it!
Please say some more about what you mean by calling the book “definitely
edgy and daring.”
Hope Baugh
Young Adult Services Manager, Carmel Clay Public Library
“Moped Army by Paul Sizer (Cafe Digital Comics, order from www.paulsizer.com)
is definitely edgy and daring. Set in the year 2777, it tells the story of
teens and young people on the fringes of society who discover a stash of
well-preserved late 20th century mopeds and develop their own culture around
keeping the machines running and living their own lives, not giving in to
the mega-corporations running almost everything.”

I thought I’d jump in here and join in the accolades for Moped Army. The art is wonderful. I loved the little bit about the library. But the characters, especially Simone were very strong. The story stays with you after you read it.

The group in Sizer’s MOPED ARMY graphic novel have a headquarters in an abandoned library (that looks a little like the Kalamazoo Public Library) and have a found a unique way to use the old cards from the card catalog.
I would really encourage you to get this book.

Paul Sizer (www.paulsizer.com) and the REAL Moped Army were at my library last night! Around 40 people braved the impending blizzard to hear Paul talk about the book, talk to the people from The Moped Army (www.mopedarmy.com) speak, and watch clips from the documentary SWARM AND DESTROY. We even had mopeds in the library!!
Paul is an excellent speaker, who really connects with teens. The theme of MOPED ARMY is very empowering and will inspire many teens.
Finally, it has been nominated for YALSA’s “Great Graphic Novel” list.
